101 cărți de citit imediat. Lista lui Francine Prose

Citesc, iată, Reading Like a Writer: A Guide for People Who Love Books and for Those Who Want to Write Them, HarperCollins Publishers (2006, 273p.), un volum semnat de Francine Prose, și fiindcă sînt obișnuit să duc cărțile pînă la capăt, ajung și la paginile 270-273, unde găsesc o listă de cărți pusă sub titlul „Books to Be Read Immediately”.

Francine Prose face parte din categoria destul de neobișnuită astăzi a literatorilor care mai cred că pentru a scrie bine este nevoie să citești mult, a celor care cred că simplul talent necultivat nu duce negreșit la o capodoperă. Tot mai puțini scriitori sînt convinși de acest adevăr umil. Lumea scrie cu înverșunare fără să mai citească. N-are timp.

Lista cu pricina cuprinde tot felul de cărți, îndeosebi ficțiune (poezie, proză), dar și eseuri despre meșteșugul scrisului, cărți de retorică, memorii. Cele mai multe sînt traduse - și încă de mult - în românește. Chiar dacă nu am timp să traduc eu însumi titlurile alese de Francine Prose (n. 1 aprilie 1947), nu mă îndoiesc de faptul că cititorii acestui blog le vor recunoaște de îndată. Sînt cărți neîndoielnic clasice. Poate un titlu sau două ridică oarece întrebări. În loc de Învierea, eu aș fi pus Hadji-Murad de același Lev Nikolaevici Tolstoi. Sînt și romane polițiste (The Big Sleep, de pildă, tradus la noi sub titlul Somnul de veci). Criteriul alcătuirii listei a fost constant unul valoric. Și tocmai pentru că Francine Prose a urmat neabătut acest criteriu, lista poate fi recomandată oricărui cititor care se respectă și oricărui cititor care dorește să scrie.

N-am numărat cîte cărți din această listă îmi sunt necunoscute, în sensul că nu le-am citit (încă). Remarc, în fine, prezența istoricului Edward Gibbon (1737 - 1794) și înțeleg încă o dată că dacă îți pui în cap să scrii bine, trebuie să străbați tot felul de cărți, inclusiv de filosofie. Și observ și faptul că Francine Prose s-a ferit de filosofi...

Observații. Titlul romanului scris de Nikolai Gogol (și rămas neterminat, din păcate) trebuia tradus prin Dead Souls: A Poem și nu cum veți vedea mai jos. Mă bucur enorm că Tatiana Tolstaia figurează la poziția 89 cu o povestire: Sleepwalker in a Fog.
     

Lipsește inexplicabil, în opinia mea, Jorge Luis Borges. Așadar:
